EDWORD: Cramming

Every so often, students, in their desperate attempt to pass something, crams and forgets important details in it. Cramming is not unusual to students. Projects given weeks before the deadline are done a day or two before the submission. Laboratory reports given a week are done the night before the deadline. Even assignments are not spared, and are usually done during breaks before the class.
There are many factors that lead students to cramming especially in Philippine Science High School. Here, time is really of the essence. Tons of work are piled on the student during weekdays and even more during weekends, including practices for performances and presentation. The work load is so great, that students on the average sleep at about 1:00 to 2:00 am, and in some cases, students do not sleep at all.
Aside from the big work load, students are also responsible for it. Oftentimes, many students are just lying around, chatting in the canteen, relaxing, and enjoying their lives. And when the time comes, they cram, usually picking other person’s work and jotting it down in their pads. Sure, copying is not that bad, as long as you understand it. But sometimes, even when time is available, students tend to habitualize it. Most often, particularly in a Physics assignment, students will be heard crying out “Pakopya ng assignment”. Although some exert a little effort, they do not see it as a challenge. Copying is good as long as it will benefit you in all ways, but if it’s beginning to be a habit, better change your ways.
Teachers are also on the blame, although they take only a small portion of it. Teachers thinking that the student can really handle the heat, gives requirements and assignments without thinking of other priorities that the student may have. Long tests and quizzes are really squished into a day when the periodicals are close. Since the submission of requirements are before the periodicals, aside from studying for the tests, and for the periodicals, students also have to finish whatever requirement is to be passed.
Cramming is really not a good method of living, but students are forced to do it. A preventive measure is to use a time table, set priorities, and notify teachers of their time conflicts with other subjects. A time table will help maximize time allotment and would also help in using time efficiently. In unavoidable situations, setting priorities could minimize the problem. Priorities help in making decisions in what to do first, and what to do best. This could help ensure the quality of requirements that we produce. Notifying teachers could avoid situations wherein time is not sufficient to complete all activities.
Through discipline and proper time management, cramming could be avoided. A cram-free life leads to relaxing life, no stress and no tension. The good way to live.

The Smudge

Everytime you see the logo on the right, what are the two things that come to your mind? Charm and Truth. The Tech logo or the smudge is just the representation of two sections belonging to the technology stream.
The smudge was placed on the right sleeve of the Tech shirt. It was also printed on the class banners of both Charm and Truth. These acts created a minor issue in our batch.
What’s wrong if there is a Tech logo? What’s wrong if there is a smudge? Nothing. But why did it create an issue. I don’t know. Well it would be better if we will no longer print the smudge in our banner. In this way, we can promote unity in our batch.

Wednesday. This has always been a day of big concern, in particular of the seniors. Wednesday is the day when the fourth years engage in Citizen Army Training or CAT-1.
The purpose of CAT-1 is to "prepare the citizen to help in times of national disaster". I’m with this. The citizen would really be a big help in times of trouble. Many hands are needed in cases of accidents and other calamities. But the thing that bothers are the rifle drills, We obviously won’t find it necessary in instances of war or battle. Doing those drills in the midst of the battle ground would surely eliminate all our men. So what are they for?
In addition to teaching us how to march and swing, the CAT program was also designed to "instill discipline in the hearts of every citizen." Is shining buckles in the middle of a class discipline? Is cramming an MC called discipline? It’s like they’re doing these things just for the sake of doing it and avoiding demerits. That’s not discipline. Discipline is started in the house, and developed inside the person. It cannot be brought about by any program or whatsoever. If a person doesn’t want to be disciplined, no amount of punishment, marching or whatsoever, can bring about discipline to that person. CAT-1 is not the road to discipline.
